Assistant Professor of Biology, Bard High School Early College, NY
Website
I teach at Bard High School Early College (BHSEC), a nationally recognized public early college, established as a partnership between Bard College and the New York City Department of Education. Students take high school courses in the 9th and 10th grades, and then engage in a full college-level course of studies in the 11th and 12th grades, graduating with an associate in arts (AA) degree from Bard College as well as a high school diploma. Students in 11th grade take a full-year of introductory college biology (General Biology and Lab) for the completion of the science requirements of the AA degree.
General Biology is an introductory biology class that includes a weekly lab with approximately 150 students coming from diverse backgrounds. In the second half of the first semester, students complete an experiment detecting epigenetic DNA methylation in A. thaliana. As a follow up to this experiment, students will spend 3-4 weeks to learn how RNA-seq can be used to address questions in biological/biomedical research. Students will learn about leaf senescence by reading select articles and they will be asked to think of potential questions as a researcher. Students will learn about existing technologies and the type of biological questions that can be addressed. They will extract SRA data (A. thaliana Leaf senescence time course, Brusslan, J. 2015) for differential gene expression and use the DNA Subway Green Line to view a completed run
